چکیده

High value specialty chemicals are usually obtained from natural products by extracting with generally regarded as safe (GRAS) soh•ents. Because organic solvents are quite often used, high operating and disposal costs often occur. When compared to traditional solvents, water can be viewed as an interesting a/tentative because of its low operating and disposal costs. Milk thistle contains compounds (taxifolin, silychristin, silydianin, silybinin A and silybinin B) that display hepatoxic protection properties. This paper examines the batch extraction of silymarin compounds from milk thistle seed meal in 5(J'C, 7(J'C, 85"C and 1 OOooC water as a function of time. For taxifolin, silychristin, silybininA and silybinin B, extraction with 1 ()()' C water resulted in the highest yields. After 210 min of extraction at 1(J(J'C, the yield of taxifolin was 1.2 mg per g of seed, while the yields of silychristin, silybinin A and silybinin B were 5.0, 3. 7 and 6.5 mg per g of seed, respectively. The overall diffusion coefficients for the four compounds increased with temperature and ranged from 0.14 x 1 rt10 to 4 x1 rt m/sec, indicating that the diffusion coefficients could potentially be used for quantitative comparisons of extraction conditions. The ratios of the extracted compounds, and particularly the ratios at long extraction times, showed that the more polar compounds (taxifolin and silychristin) were preferentially extracted at 85"C, while the less polar silybinin was preferentially extracted at 1(J(J'C.

Ultrasonic-assisted enzymatic extraction of silymarin from the Silybum marianum seed shell and evaluation of its antioxidant activity in vitro

This study revealed the optimal conditions for the Ultrasonic-Assisted Enzymatic Extraction (UAEE) of silymarin, and include: the concentration of ethanol, 50 %; enzyme concentration, 30 U/mg; liquid-solid ratio, 6:1; an extraction time of 120 min; and the ultrasonic power at 180 W. The extraction rate was 7.86 %, which is higher, by 74.67 %, than that of the silymarin extract from the Silybum ...

Flavonolignans from Aspergillus iizukae, a fungal endophyte of milk thistle (Silybum marianum).

Silybin A (1), silybin B (2), and isosilybin A (3), three of the seven flavonolignans that constitute silymarin, an extract of the fruits of milk thistle (Silybum marianum), were detected for the first time from a fungal endophyte, Aspergillus iizukae, isolated from the surface-sterilized leaves of S. marianum. The flavonolignans were identified using a UPLC-PDA-HRMS-MS/MS method by matching re...

Pharmacokinetic analysis

Silymarin, an extract of the seeds of Silybum marianum L. (milk thistle), is used for treatment of liver diseases. It contains several active flavonolignans; the major are silybin, which is a mixture of diastereomers A and B, and silychristin. Low bioavailability of silybin and silychristin is related to low water solubility of these compounds. In order to enhance the solubility, S. marianum dr...

Silymarin production by hairy root culture of Milk thistle (Silybum marianum L. Gaertn) was investigated using Agrobacterium rhizogenes AR15834. Hairy roots were induced by injection or inoculation of explants with A. rhizogenes. One month old hairy roots were dissected from the explants and grown in Murashing and Skoog (MS) liquid medium. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) using the B gene and th...
